Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last strongholds of the mountain gorilla. Around 459 of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live within Bwindi's volcanic ridges and tangled jungle — and trekking to spend a single, life-changing hour with one of the habituated families is among the most extraordinary wildlife experiences anywhere on Earth.
This is a focused, high-impact journey: arrive in Entebbe, fly directly to Kihihi airstrip on the edge of the forest, and base yourself for three nights at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp — the only luxury lodge actually inside the national park itself. Two days of gorilla trekking with a third reserved for community or birdwatching activities, then fly back to Entebbe for your onward connection.
Why we love this journey — Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp's location is genuinely unique — it is the only camp inside Bwindi National Park, and gorilla families visit the camp itself four to six times per month. The trek to find a habituated family is shorter from here than from any other lodge. For first-time gorilla trekkers, this is the right base. For returning trekkers, this is still the right base.
Met on arrival at Entebbe International Airport and transferred to a comfortable airport hotel for the night. (For guests arriving on early flights, a same-day connection to Bwindi may be possible — your Safari Advisor will confirm.)
Morning transfer to Entebbe domestic terminal for a 2-hour scheduled light-aircraft flight to Kihihi airstrip. Met by your guide and driven (about 75 minutes) to Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, set on a flat ridge deep within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Settle in, late lunch, and afternoon at leisure — perhaps a walk to Munyaga Waterfall or an hour at the camp's mini-spa.
Early breakfast and transfer to the trekking briefing point — just minutes from camp. Allocated a habituated gorilla family, then trek into the forest with armed rangers and trackers. The trek can take anywhere from 40 minutes to six hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, you spend exactly one hour in their company — observing, photographing, simply being. Return to camp for a celebratory late lunch and the afternoon at leisure.
A second gorilla trek with a different habituated family is strongly recommended — gorilla families behave very differently from one another, and the second trek is often the more memorable. Alternatively, visit the local Batwa community for an interactive cultural experience, or join a guided birdwalk to spot some of Bwindi's 350+ bird species, including 24 endemic to the region.
Morning transfer back to Kihihi airstrip and light-aircraft flight to Entebbe for your onward international connection.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp — part of the A&K Sanctuary collection — is the only accommodation located within Bwindi National Park itself. Set on a flat ridge deep in the forest, it offers an unrivalled location for gorilla trekking and birdwatching, with a resident family of gorillas visiting the camp four to six times per month. The camp blends ecologically respectful contemporary design with the dramatic mountain landscape around it.
Eight (some sources cite ten) stylish and spacious tents, each featuring queen-sized beds and a generous bathtub that looks straight into the jungle canopy. Indigenous prints, locally sourced furniture, and stone-walled bathrooms with free-standing baths complete the picture. Each tent has a personal attendant, and a private viewing deck for sundowners.
A bar and dining cottage overlooks the rainforest, with a raised natural platform for open-air dining under the stars. Chef Medard serves three-course silver-service dinners; breakfast is full English and continental; packed lunches with fresh fruit are prepared for trekking days. Drinks around the campfire close each evening.
